Matt Burgess

LLB (Bond), Grad Dip, Sports Law (Melbourne)

Matt has worked in varying executive roles in-house for governing bodies and as a gun-for-hire for sports clients for the past 14 years. Matt is a leader who works to show the excellence in sports business by applying effective innovation.

Matt has a deep experience within sports business, ranging from Associate General Counsel and Head of Sports Integrity for World Surf League based out of Los Angeles, to advising PGA Australia and ALPG (professional Golf in Australia) on how they can see real commercial benefit together, to advising FashionTV on the many uses of broadcast rights, brand and licensing within the Oceania region. The depth of experience comes from acting as in-house advisor working WITH a business, not FOR a business.

His most recent work had him prepare the sports of surfing and skateboarding for their Olympic debut in 2020, including drafting and implementation of required integrity policy of skateboarding in Australia through Sport Australia and the Skateboard 2020 Commission. This was in addition to his role as Head of Sports Integrity for World Surf League (USA), where he worked with the International Surfing Association (USA) to better their Anti-Doping approach leading into the Olympics in 2020.

Matt’s active network of commercial and government relationships has provided significant resource to other action and lifestyle sports properties like Street League Skateboarding (SLS) based out of the USA. He has used this network to consolidate the stakeholders in Australian Lifestyle and Action Sport as the Coalition of Lifestyle and Action Sports (COLAS) and ensure a true voice is available to the Australian Parliament from this active demographic within Australia.

Matt continues and takes great pride in his effort in voluntary roles including sitting on the Board of the Tweed Seagulls Rugby League Club (Australia) and the Global Action Sports Foundation (USA). He is an avid surfer, snowboarder and plays amateur rugby, tennis and basketball. Most importantly, Matt takes the time to understand any problem to solve, listen to those who have lived it, think laterally and provides clear, innovative solutions.
